A twenty minute ferry ride on Conception Bay will bring you to Bell Island, a great place to tour, and an excellent day trip from Holyrood Conception Bay, while you explore the Avalon Peninsula. The ferry ride by itself is worth the trip, you can enjoy the spectacular scenery and fresh sea air. You may even see a whale or sea birds while crossing the tickle.

The island was once a thriving mining community, you can see giant murals that commemorate the islands proud heritage. Visit the miner's museum and see the many artifacts, including samples of the iron ore that made Bell Island one of the most important mining operations in the world. The island has also seen a rare meteorological phenomenon called Ball Lightning. IN 1978 scientists and military personal from as far away as Los Alamos, New Mexico came to inspect the site. You can still see holes left from the blast.
